Brad and Tricia stumbled out of their cab, barely able to keep their eyes open, much less stand up straight. While her husband dealt with the fare, Tricia stared sightlessly off into the distance, her mind swimming sluggishly to nowhere in particular.
“Darling? Let’s go,” Brad mumbled, linking his arm through hers and guiding her on the final stretch back to their apartment.
She couldn’t help but smile. She was his darling, wasn’t she? And he was her husband. It was hard to believe that any of this was real, and even though they’d just gotten back from their gorgeous honeymoon.
“I love you so much,” she half-murmured, half-slurred.
“I love you too.” He sounded only slightly less out of it than she did. Part of Tricia wished that they could hold hands, but she also recognized that they were practically holding one another up.
“The elevator,” Tricia said. “The stairs might keep me awake a little better, but there is also a very real risk of falling and breaking our necks.”
At another time, that might have startled a laugh from Brad at the sheer irony of such a tragedy, but at the moment, he could manage nothing more than forcing the air from his nose.
