Summer.
My favorite season of all time, and no, it’s not because my name is Summer.
Okay, just a little bit, but that’s beside the point because who doesn’t love summer?
You just had to either hate fun or be a psychopath!
School is out, and you can only do so many activities during those three months, ranging from BBQing, fishing, hiking, camping, traveling, surfing, road-tripping, and so much more. If you were to ask me about my favorite summer activity, it would be resting in the middle of a lake on a pink inflatable heart pool float just as the sun is due to set.
Seriously, this was the pinnacle of not just realization but summer itself.
“Sum-Sum!”
My ears perk as I see my boyfriend waving me back from where he’s been standing at the front of his motorboat, which I had fondly named “Sunshine.” While I love my nickname, I'm seriously giving significant death glares to "Rick and Morty" for popularizing it, as Morty's sister was also named Summer, which Rick, their grandpa, shortened to Sum-Sum.
I tilt my head back comfortably. “Hm?”
“Come watch the sunset with me, babe!”
Aw, cute.
My sappy partner really does love watching the sunset.
Since I love Vince, I have to do my due diligence by giving in to some of the demands, like when he wants to watch the sunset with me. I give a thumbs up, taking a deep breath before diving right into the cool, refreshing water and making strokes back towards the motorboat. I wasn’t exactly worried about the inflatable drifting off since we had tied it towards the boat just in case.
Popping my head out of the water, I get a steady grip on the railing and hoist myself up while I blindly reach for a towel and drape it over myself. I’m a little buzzed by how many spiked sparkles I had today. Though then again, I’m still in my college partying phase since we just graduated last month.
Hey, you’re only twenty-one once.
A slight frown appears when I realize Vince didn’t make his way towards me.
Weird.
After all, he was usually like a golden retriever. That was the nickname given to him by our friend group, which he doesn’t mind in the slightest because he views it as a compliment. From his tousled golden hair, great personality, and the cherry on top is his loyalty towards the one person he loves.
So…where is he? Why didn’t he come over to greet me like usual?
Again, strange.
I know him better than anyone, so for him to do this didn’t exactly sit well, as our sixth anniversary is coming up. For a moment, in my buzzed state, I thought he might have fallen over. I can feel the blood draining from my face in the worst-case scenario as I hold onto the railing not to fall over while making my way up to the front of the boat.
“Vince, are you—oh my God!”
